Third annual ‘Flavors of Our Community’ culturally relevant food drive delivers to food shelves across the Twin Cities and beyond

More than 5 million people across Minnesota visited food shelves in 2022, according to the nonprofit Hunger Solutions Minnesota, which was a record high and nearly more than 2 million from the previous year.The reasons include rising food costs, loss of food support programs such as stimulus payments and more, according to the group. The Greater Twin Cities United Way recognized that for the immigrant communities in the metro area, many may not be finding food they are familiar with. In response, they created the “Flavors of Our Community,” a culturally relevant food drive.This is the third year in a row that the United Way has partnered with various nonprofits in the state to create a food drive that has “essential items for Afghan, East African, Karen, Latinx, Indigenous and Southeast Asian Minnesotans,” according to a press release.The United Way and their partner nonprofit organizations, such as 360 Communities and Division of Indian Work, are developing 11 different kinds of fo...

Colonie man found guilty of sex and human trafficking

COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) - A Colonie man accused of sex trafficking and human trafficking, including trafficking and coercing minors, was found guilty of all charges on Friday. Christopher Thomas, 36, was convicted on 16 counts on Friday in United States District Court, and is expected to face 15 years to life in prison, according to an announcement by Federal Bureau of Investigation and New York State Police officials, and U.S. Attorney Carla B. First indicted in 2021, Thomas was found to have trafficked and exploited victims as young as age 16. Those victims were used for commercial sex enterprises in several states, including New York, Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts, for Thomas' own financial benefit. Friday, the Glens Falls native announcing that he'll go through the 2023 NBA Draft process but will maintain his collegiate eligibility. State data showing decline in gun violence

(NEWS10)--Shootings in New York have decreased from 2021 to 2022 according to recently released State data."Down 17% in New York City, 15% in the rest of upstate cities," said Governor Kathy Hochul. According to the governor, those numbers are already improving this year with the state seeing a reduction closer to pre-pandemic levels."The data doesn’t lie. WILTON, NY (NEWS10) - The Wilton Town Board says they expect an updated proposal for development of the Wilton Mall on May 4th. Councilman Ray O’Conor says they received a letter from the mall's ownership group, Macerich, stating they intend on making a presentation at that meeting.The current proposal has been met with challenges. "There’s this premise that if you put hundreds of apartments or townhomes there that it saves the mall, I don’t know that they’ve made that case yet," said councilman Ray O'Conor. He says he's not convinced mixed use apartments are the best solution. "To be quite candid some of the concerns ideas of members of the town board were dismissed, ignored and so that’s put the brakes on the chances of this project being approved," said O'Conor.O’Conor says he hopes the updated plans address more than just the residential components. ST. LOUIS - Miles Mikolas will take the mound for the St. Louis Cardinals on Opening Day, and he'll draw the big assignment with a new contract. Mikolas has agreed to a two-year, $40 million with the Cardinals. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch was among the first to report on the extension. Two dead after car swept away in Missouri flash flood

WRIGHT COUNTY, Mo. - Two people died early Friday in Missouri when a car was swept away during torrential rains that were part of a severe weather system roaring across parts of the Midwest and South.The accident happened just after midnight in a sparsely populated area of southwestern Missouri. Authorities said six young adults were in the vehicle that was swept away as the car tried to cross a bridge over a flooded creek in the town of Grovespring.Four of the six made it out of the water. But the body of Devon Holt, 20, of Grovespring, was found at 3:30 a.m., and the body of Alexander Roman-Ranelli, 19, of Springfield, was recovered about six hours later, Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WMBD)-- The Illinois General Assembly passed HB 1049 on Thursday, preventing dog breed discrimination by insurance companies.Spearheaded by Best Friends Animal Society and rep. Rita Mayfield, the text of the bill is that; No insurer shall refuse to issue or renew, cancel, or charge or impose and increased premium or rate for a policy or contract, or exclude, limit, restrict or reduce coverage for a policy or contract based soley upon harboring or owning any dog of a specific breed or mix. It does not prohibit an insurer from refusing to issue or renew or from cancelling a policy or imposing an increased fee based upon the designation of an individual dog of any breed or mix as a dangerous or vicious dog under the Illinois Animal Control Act. Prior to the legislation, a majority of Illinois insurance companies could dictate what breed or mix of dog owners can keep regardless of behavior.
